Traditional IRA's

Traditional IRA's are a great way to save and invest for retirement.

The IRA had its humble beginnings in 1974 under the first ERISA guidelines and then rules were written in the IRS publication 590. Since then, there have been many changes and additions to the Family of IRA Accounts.

The Most common type of Account is the "Traditional IRA." The Traditional IRA allows you to place a deposit into your account and receive a tax deduction on your income tax. In order to receive this deduction you must first have wage income; wage income means that you have income sources besides dividends, interests, rental income, and other NON-wage income. You also have to phase-out of the deductions for contributions.

Roth IRAs

Roth IRAs are a newer form of an IRA account that was created in the Tax Relief Act of 1997.

This new IRA has a few new and unique benefits:

  • Retirement distributions are TAX FREE
  • Contributions are Fully Taxed
  • You must qualify to open and make contributions

One thing to consider...there are so many rules, uses and choices with Roth IRAs that they should be considered a "tool" in retirement and not the sole vehicle to get there. Roth IRAs are frequently used in a holistic approach to retirement planning and sometimes are not even used until after retirement for conversions and other uses.
